Dimitri in Conversation with Jean Swanson, Vancouver City Councillor
From cutting the police budget to ending homelessness, tune in for a conversation between Vancouver City Councillor, Jean Swanson, and Dimitri Lascaris.
Jean Swanson has been an anti-poverty and social justice activist for over 40 years in Vancouver and across the country. In 2016, she was awarded the Order of Canada for “her long-standing devotion to social justice, notably for her work with the residents of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside". Since being elected to council in 2018, she has been a tireless champion for low income and marginalized people, pushing to make housing affordable for renters of Vancouver and DTES safer for the residents. In July 2020, her motion for the City to start the process of re-allocating the police budget to community-led safety initiatives, passed unanimously, after hearing from 400 speakers in support.
In this conversation, Jean talks to Dimitri about how the Federal government could end homelessness by investing in housing, instead of policing, and about their mutual interest in taxing the wealthy and spending for the rest of us.
